Restoration and Rejuvenation Room for UPMC Staff
Grant Application
Kristine Keefer Wolff, Interim Director of Nursing, UPMC Presbyterian
Proposed Innovation
The Restoration Room is in the North Wing of UPMC Montefiore’s fourth floor and serves as a place to help staff relax and return to work feeling rejuvenated. This healthy work environmeent helps staff recharge so they can better serve the needs of the next round of patients and family members. The Beckwith Institute helped with a grant to support the development of the room.
Improvements in Action
The Restoration Room is a haven where staff can find soft music, aromatherapy, and dim lighting to help clear the body and mind of adrenaline and stress. Staff retreat to the Restoration Room to recover from the mental and emotional exhaustion associated with such crisis-related work as patient trauma and illness.
Results
Staff use the Restoration Room, and set timers to ensure they don’t become “too relaxed.” On average, staff members report a 3.5 reduction in stress using a 10-point rating scale.
